I Was Born With An Optic Pit and What Its Like

THIS IS THE PICTURE OF MY OPTIC NERVE PIT.

I was born with this abnormality.  I didn’t know that I even had it until I went to get my first pair of eyeglasses when I was pregnant with my first child.  That was in my early 20’s.  After the ophthalmologist looked into my eye he exclaimed…yes exclaimed that I had an optic pit.  Well I had no idea what that was.  He told me that he had only seen it in textbooks.  He told me that he would be right back in a few minutes.  OMG he called about three other ophthalmologists to tell them what he saw.  Unfortunately there is no cure for this or there was not at that time.  So I live with that.  Let me try to explain what it is like for me to live with.  Imagine you looking out of your eye.  Now see it as a pie.  Now see a slice of that pie missing.  That affects your sight but either a blur or a blank spot in your vision.  Oh and it can move around your eye, so one day it will be at the bottom left side of your vision and the next day at the top of your vision or on the right side another day.  At first you do not seem to notice this but as you get older it begins to affect your vision more and more.  Some days everything is blurry.

Typing has never been one of my strongest things to do and funny neither is bowling.  I think that it has something to do with the optic pit that I was born with.  I use spell check all the time but sometimes I can’t even see the misspelled words.  I had a job once that I had to quit because I didn’t see all the typos that I was making and they did not like my work.  It is not that I misspell them, it is that I can’t see that I have hit an I or an O or a C or a V.  It is not that I do not know how to spell.  I get upset with those perfectionists that come down on people who they think cannot spell.  They do not realize that some of us can spell very good…….we just cannot type or see very well or we have a disease that makes our hands shake so that we cannot type good either.  I wish for those who harp on spelling and putting those down to just stop.

I love writing and love getting my words out to others.  I will not stop writing and I do not want to have to hire a Ghostwriter.
